Frequently Asked Questions
Since 1996 Trex has invented, defined and perfected the composite deck category, becoming the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking products. Today Trex offers the most innovative and technologically advanced products in more than 40 countries, including Australia. Trex combines the durability of recycled plastic with the natural beauty of reclaimed wood to create high performance composite decking.
Great composite decking stands the test of time. When installed and maintained correctly, Trex Decking boasts a remarkable lifespan spanning several decades. The inclusion of a limited residential warranty by Trex further solidifies this longevity.
This warranty encompasses factors such as fading, staining, and the overall structural integrity of the decking. By adhering to recommended maintenance practices and utilising Trex’s warranty coverage, you can enjoy the lasting beauty and durability of your Trex composite decking for many years to come.
Yes, Trex Decking can be used for various outdoor structures, including decks, porches, patios, and even docks. Its durability and low-maintenance features make it suitable for a range of applications.
Yes, following manufactures installation guides TREX Transcend has a BAL rating of 19 & 29.
BAL Testing Results – Australia Bushfire Testing for Trex Transcend® Decking
Full-scale bushfire deck testing of Trex Transcend square-edge and grooved-edge decking was performed in accordance with AS1530.8.1 by Exova Warringtonfire®, an accredited third-party Australian lab. Consult AS3959:2018 for additional construction details and requirements.
Yes, you can place heavy furniture and grills on Trex Decking. However, it’s recommended to use protective mats or pads to prevent any potential gouging of the surface.
Trex Decking has a textured surface that provides some slip resistance, even when wet. However, like any outdoor surface, it’s important to exercise caution when the deck is wet.
All Trex decking weighs between 1.88lbs and 2.51lbs per linear foot with our scalloped boards weighing slightly less than our solid profile boards.
Most area rugs aren't a problem with Trex decking, but we do recommend cleaning underneath them regularly. In rare cases, rugs made of plastic or viscose materials may bleed, drawing colorant out of the decking or making them difficult to remove. Always allow your decking to fully dry before fitting a rug into place.
While most of the raw materials used in making Trex are recycled, these materials are carefully processed to ensure the highest level of quality and performance. The end result is decking that performs better than wood, lowering your cost over time through lesser maintenance.
Trex wood plastic composite products are not structural and should only be used for intended design purposes such as walking surfaces, guardrail systems, fencing and trim.
Trex should never be sanded. Sanding will change the appearance and protective qualities of the Trex material and will void the warranty with respect to any condition caused by sanding.
For our early generation composite decking (Trex Accents, Trex Origins, Trex Brasilia, Trex Profiles or Trex Contours), Trex does not recommend the use of a power washer. Use of a power washer will damage the decking surface and will void the warranty with respect to any condition caused by the power washing.
Trex high-performance decking (Trex Transcend, Trex Enhance and Trex Select) can be power washed. Use only a fan tip and up to a 3100 psi power washer to remove dirt and debris. The fan tip should be no closer than 8 inches (20.4 cm) away from the protective shell during use.
Trex decking is designed for a low-maintenance experience. A simple soap-and-water clean is all it takes. Be sure to download and read our cleaning guide for more information.
Wood or gas fire pits should not be placed on top of Trex decking. However, gas fire pits may be installed beside or between deck boards with a protective wall made of stone or other fire-resistant material used for insulation.
Wood burning fire pits should not be placed on top of Trex decking unless installed with DeckProtect™, a product designed to temper extreme heat and loose embers.
Yes, the substructure is a critical component of a successful Trex composite decking installation. The substructure serves as the foundation for your deck and provides the necessary support and stability for the decking boards.
Here are some important details to consider regarding the substructure for Trex Decking:
It provides support, stability, and load-bearing capacity for the deck.
Different substructure materials (wood, steel, aluminium) can be used based on project requirements and local codes.
Trex requires a minimum or 38mm clearance under the board.
Substructure design should include proper joist spacing, beam placement, and support.
Adequate ventilation and drainage must be integrated into the substructure design.
Joist spacing varies depending on the installation requirements. Engineering reports available upon request.
While DIY installation is possible, professional installation is recommended for optimal results.
Proper substructure construction is crucial for preventing issues like sagging, mould, and rot.
Remember that following Trex’s official installation guidelines and considering professional assistance can lead to a successful and long-lasting Trex composite decking installation.
