– Cover Grade & Seconds Australian Hardwood Flooring
– Reclaimed at the Mill
– Not all reclaimed timber needs to come from an old building.
Nationwide Timber’s Mill-Reclaimed Hardwood Flooring is about making better use of Australian hardwood by recovering suitable timber through the milling and grading process and giving it an opportunity to become a distinctive, character-filled floor.
These boards are generally classified as Cover Grade or Seconds and may contain characteristics outside the higher flooring grades, including knots, gum veins, natural colour variation, shorter lengths and machining imperfections.
Rather than overlooking usable hardwood simply because it doesn’t meet the requirements of Select, Standard or Feature Grade, suitable boards can be salvaged and put to use as flooring.
This timber may otherwise become waste or be diverted to lower-value applications. By recovering suitable boards, Mill-Reclaimed Flooring helps make better use of the timber resource while offering genuine Australian hardwood at an attractive price point.
Mill-Reclaimed Flooring isn’t intended to look like Select Grade — its character is part of its appeal.
Knots, gum veins, holes, colour variation, shorter lengths and other natural or manufacturing characteristics can contribute to a rustic and highly individual finished floor.
Careful board selection, cutting and installation allows the installer to work with the timber and determine which features become part of the finished result. Additional wastage should be allowed for compared with higher flooring grades.
Traditional recycled timber flooring is reclaimed from existing buildings, warehouses, factories, wharves and other structures where the timber has previously served another purpose.
Mill-Reclaimed Flooring is different. It is recovered earlier in the timber lifecycle through the milling and grading process.
While their origins are different, the philosophy is similar: recover usable timber, make better use of the resource and give quality hardwood another opportunity.
For customers who appreciate natural variation and are willing to work with the characteristics of Cover Grade and Seconds timber, Mill-Reclaimed Flooring can offer outstanding value and a finished floor with genuine individuality.
It’s a different way of looking at Cover Grade timber — not simply for what it isn’t, but for what it can become.
Reclaimed at the Mill. Use more of the tree. Waste less timber. Create a floor with character.

The feature present or natural discolouration will not dominate its appearance. Features that are permitted still include short narrow gum veins, a limited number and size of past borer activity and small tight knots.
Significantly more character than Select Grade. To some degree this will depend on the features present in a particular species. In one species gum veins may naturally be prevalent while in another there may be few gum veins but past borer activity may be more prevalent. Therefore, this grade can be expected to have greater character than Select Grade, and contain an increased amount of gum vein, past borer activity, tight knots and natural discolouration.
Best referred to as effectively a mix of Standard Grade and Select Grade.
A timber that contains boards with similar features to Medium Feature Standard Grade but where the length of features such as gum veins may be longer and past borer activity may be more frequent. Again, depending on the species, features will vary and in some instances boards meeting high feature grade may only appear moderately featured.
Best referred to as a mixture of Feature Grade and Standard Grade.
This grade contains more than the permissible number of natural features and shorter lengths. Cover Grade will contain miss-machining/manufacturing defaults, and can contain large amounts of gum vein, knot holes and other natural features such as holes.
The Janka Ratings you see on this website refer to how "hard" a timber is. The harder the timber, the higher the rating. So a timber with a rating of 15 is very different in strength to the softest timber we sell, which has a rating of 3.
